Why journeys in Kumaon start at Kathgodam
Kathgodam (station code KGM) is the terminus of the broad-gauge railway line in Kumaon. The track ends here, on the bank of the Gaula river, at the point where the plains meet the hills. Everything further into the mountains — Nainital, Bhimtal, Kainchi Dham, Almora, Ranikhet, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Munsiyari — is reached by road from this point. Kathgodam is the railhead suburb of Haldwani, roughly a fifteen-minute drive from Haldwani town.
That geography is the whole reason a Kathgodam taxi market exists. Overnight trains from Delhi, Lucknow, Dehradun, Howrah and Jaisalmer terminate here, several of them before dawn, and a few hundred people step off each one needing to get somewhere in the hills.
A useful piece of trivia that trips people up: the Ranikhet Express does not go to Ranikhet. It terminates at Kathgodam. If you are booked on it expecting to wake up in Ranikhet, you have a two-and-a-half to three hour drive ahead of you.

How Kathgodam taxi fares actually work
We do not publish a fixed rate card for this route, and we would rather explain why than show you a number that changes the moment you ask about it. A hill-route fare is not one number — it moves with the vehicle, the season, whether the driver returns empty, and how long the car is held.
You will see a very wide spread of prices quoted online for the same journey. For Kathgodam to Nainital, roughly 34 to 35 km, published quotes range from around seven hundred rupees at the stand to well over two thousand on some national booking platforms. Both numbers can be real. What differs is the vehicle, whether the driver returns empty, whether tolls and parking are inside the figure, and whether the price assumes you will wait for the car to fill.
What moves the price
- One way versus round trip. This is the single biggest factor and the one most quoted prices hide. On a hill route a one-way drop usually means the driver returns empty. You are paying for a vehicle and a driver's day, not only for the kilometres you sit in the car. That is why a one-way fare is often closer to a return fare than people expect.
- Vehicle class. A hatchback and a seven-seat SUV are different costs to run on a continuous climb.
- Season. Peak weeks — roughly late April to mid-June, and around major festivals and the Kainchi Dham anniversary in June — are busier and dearer than a quiet week in September.
- Waiting and sightseeing. A straight drop is not the same as holding the car while you spend three hours at a temple or a lake.
- Night travel and pre-dawn pickups. Overnight trains reach Kathgodam before first light. We do run those pickups; they cost more than a mid-morning one.
- Tolls, parking and entry charges. Nainital levies a toll on vehicles entering the town, and parking at Nainital and Kainchi Dham can be a real cost in season.

The Nainital district administration publishes hill-driving rules that are worth knowing even as a passenger: sound the horn on blind curves, descending vehicles give way to ascending vehicles, and a first-aid kit is required in the vehicle.
