Arriving at Kathgodam railway station
A practical guide to getting from the platform to your destination — including when you do not need to book a taxi at all.

Yes, taxis are available at Kathgodam railway station. There is a taxi stand immediately outside the exit, and independent drivers approach arriving passengers on the platform and forecourt. Which is better depends on your train, your group and your destination — and the honest answer is that for a short daytime run to Nainital or Bhimtal, walking to the stand is often perfectly fine, while for a pre-dawn arrival, a long route, a family with luggage or a fixed onward schedule, pre-booking is worth it. What Kathgodam station is
Kathgodam, station code KGM, is a terminus. The broad-gauge line ends here on the North Eastern Railway's Izzatnagar division, at roughly 550 to 625 metres above sea level — published sources differ, which tells you something about how carefully most travel information about this place is written. It has four platforms and it is the road gateway to the whole of interior Kumaon.
Trains that terminate here include the New Delhi–Kathgodam Shatabdi, the Ranikhet Express (15013/15014) from Jaisalmer, the Naini Doon Jan Shatabdi from Dehradun, the Lucknow Junction–Kathgodam Express, the Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti and the Bagh Express from Howrah. Check current timings on IRCTC or NTES rather than on any travel website, this one included — timetables change and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Arriving: what actually happens
You step off, walk down the platform and out through the exit. From that moment several things happen at once, and knowing the shape of it in advance makes the difference between a calm start and a stressful one.
- You will be approached. Independent drivers work the platform and the forecourt and will quote you a price directly. This is normal and mostly harmless, but it means negotiating while tired and carrying bags.
- There is a taxi stand at the station. Travellers consistently report a booking counter to the right as you exit, which issues a receipt for your booking. If you are going to take a taxi on the spot, a counter booking with a receipt is a more solid arrangement than an unrecorded price agreed with someone on the platform.
- Prices on the spot are often lower than online platform quotes for the same short run, particularly to Nainital and Bhimtal. We are a taxi operator telling you this, which should tell you we mean it. What you trade away is certainty, vehicle choice, and someone waiting for you if your train is three hours late.
If you have pre-booked with us: we send you the vehicle registration number, the driver's name and phone number, and the exact meeting point by WhatsApp the evening before you travel. Message the driver when you step off — the forecourt is busy in season and it is far easier to find each other by phone than by scanning faces.
Pre-dawn arrivals
This is the case that matters most and that almost nothing online addresses. Several overnight trains reach Kathgodam in the small hours or around first light. If that is your train:
- The station is not deserted — trains arriving means drivers waiting — but you have less choice and less leverage than at ten in the morning.
- Shared taxis and buses are far less reliable before dawn than during the day. If your plan depends on a shared jeep at 5 am, have a fallback.
- Nainital, Bhimtal and Kainchi Dham are all comfortably reachable before breakfast, which is genuinely the best time to travel these roads — no traffic, no queues at Kainchi Dham, and you arrive before check-in chaos.
- If you are heading somewhere long — Munsiyari, Dharchula, Pithoragarh — a pre-dawn arrival is an advantage, because those drives need the daylight. Starting a ten-hour mountain drive at noon is a bad idea.
Buses and shared taxis
We would rather answer this than pretend it does not exist. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses and shared jeeps do operate from the Kathgodam and Haldwani area, and for a solo traveller on a budget going to a main destination in daylight, they are a reasonable option. Travellers report that buses are harder to find directly at Kathgodam than at Haldwani. Shared services thin out sharply outside daylight hours and are not a dependable plan for a pre-dawn arrival or for a family with luggage.
If you are two people with backpacks going to Nainital at eleven in the morning, you do not need us. If you are five people with suitcases arriving at 5:10 am and heading to Almora, you probably do.
Getting to the main destinations
Going to Jim Corbett? Ramnagar station (code RMR) is the railhead for the park, not Kathgodam, and it is much closer to the gates. If you have not booked yet and Corbett is your only destination, check trains to Ramnagar first. We will still drive you from Kathgodam if that is where you land — but you should know.

Are shared taxis or buses available early in the morning?
Less reliably than during the day. Shared jeeps and buses do run from the Kathgodam and Haldwani area, and travellers report buses are easier to find at Haldwani than at Kathgodam itself. Before dawn, do not build a plan that depends on one.
How far is Nainital from Kathgodam railway station?

Is Kathgodam the right station for Jim Corbett?
Usually not. Ramnagar (RMR) is the railhead for Corbett and is far closer to the park gates. If Corbett is your only destination and you have not booked trains yet, check Ramnagar first.
Does the Ranikhet Express go to Ranikhet?
No. Despite the name, it terminates at Kathgodam. Ranikhet is a further two and a half to three hour drive.
