Chauffeur-driven hire
Car rental in Kathgodam
Hire a vehicle with an experienced local driver — for a single journey, a full day, or a multi-day Kumaon circuit.
Quick answer
In Kathgodam, "car rental" almost always means a car with a driver, not a self-drive hire. PahadiDrive rents vehicles with an experienced local driver by the journey, by the day, or for multi-day Kumaon tours. We do not offer self-drive hire, and for most visitors that is the right answer anyway — these are continuous hill roads with blind bends, and an unfamiliar driver on them in monsoon or after dark is a genuine risk rather than a saving.
The terminology, because it causes real confusion
Search for car rental in Kathgodam and you will find results from international self-drive brands that have no presence here at all. There is no airport rental desk at Kathgodam. What exists on the ground is chauffeur-driven hire, and that is what almost every local operator means by the phrase.
| What you might mean | What is actually available here | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Rent a car and drive it myself | Very limited in this area, and rare from Kathgodam itself | We do not offer this |
| Rent a car with a driver for a journey | The standard model across Kumaon | Yes — one way, return or point to point |
| Rent a car with a driver for a full day | Common, priced by day with a distance allowance | Yes — local sightseeing or a full day at your disposal |
| Rent a car and driver for several days | Common for Kumaon circuits | Yes — same vehicle and driver throughout |
Why we do not recommend self-drive here even where you can find it
This is not a sales line. The roads from Kathgodam climb roughly 1,500 metres in thirty kilometres on the Nainital side, with continuous hairpins. Further out, the Kwarab stretch on the Almora highway has been repeatedly closed by landslides since 2024. The road past Thal toward Munsiyari degrades badly and is landslide-prone in rain. Local convention on blind bends — horn on the curve, descending vehicles give way to ascending ones — is something drivers here do by reflex and visitors often do not know.
If you genuinely want to self-drive Uttarakhand, do it. Just do it having read about the roads, not on the assumption that a hill road is a flat road with a view.
Rental formats we run
By the journey
A defined pickup and drop. Simplest and usually cheapest if you only need to get from A to B.
By the day
Vehicle and driver at your disposal for a half or full day within an agreed area, with a distance allowance. Right for local sightseeing around Nainital, Bhimtal, Mukteshwar or Almora, where you want to stop when you feel like it.
Multi-day and circuits
The same vehicle and driver for four to seven days or more through Kumaon. Worth planning around realistic daily distances: 150 to 250 km is a full day in these hills. See our circuit itineraries.
Long-term and corporate
Extended-duration hire and regular corporate transport in the Kathgodam and Haldwani area. Talk to us directly.
Vehicles available
Hatchback, sedan, SUV, 4x4 and Tempo Traveller. The fleet page sets out what each is genuinely suited to, with luggage limits, because boot space is the thing that most often goes wrong for families.

Common questions
Do you offer self-drive car rental in Kathgodam?
No. We provide vehicles with an experienced local driver. Self-drive hire is very limited in this area, and on these hill roads we would not recommend it to a visitor unfamiliar with them.
Is car rental in Kathgodam the same as a taxi?
In practice they overlap. A taxi usually means a defined journey; car rental usually means the vehicle and driver are yours for a period of time. We do both and the pricing model differs between them.
Can I keep the same driver for a multi-day trip?
Yes, and for a circuit we would strongly recommend it. A driver who knows your group, your pace and your luggage makes a multi-day trip work far better than a new vehicle each morning.
Is there a car rental desk at Kathgodam railway station?
Not in the airport-style sense. There is a taxi stand outside the station. For a chauffeur-driven vehicle held for a period, arrange it in advance rather than expecting a rental counter.
Do I need to pay for the driver's food and accommodation on a multi-day trip?
We tell you at the quote stage exactly how driver allowance is handled on your booking rather than leaving it to be discovered on day three. Ask, and you will get a straight answer in writing.
